The Market-Place

BY WALTER DE LA MARE

My mind is like a clamorous market-place.
   All day in wind, rain, sun, its babel wells;
   Voice answering to voice in tumult swells.
Chaffering and laughing, pushing for a place,
My thoughts haste on, gay, strange, poor, simple, base;
   This one buys dust, and that a bauble sells:
   But none to any scrutiny hints or tells
The haunting secrets hidden in each sad face.
The clamour quietens when the dark draws near;
   Strange looms the earth in twilight of the West,
Lonely with one sweet star serene and clear,
   Dwelling, when all this place is hushed to rest,
   On vacant stall, gold, refuse, worst and best,
Abandoned utterly in haste and fear.

Look and see her how she sparkles, it’s the last unicorn I’m alive, I’m alive. Jimmy Webb.

“Today it is said that the unicorn never existed. However, it is marvelously clear that when the unicorn was first described and centuries later when the tapestries were woven, everyone believed in unicorns.”
–Marianna Mayer, The Unicorn and the Lake

“I do not care what comes after; I have seen the dragons on the wind of morning.” Ursula K. Le Guin, The Farthest Shore

“Down there – he said – are people who will follow any dragon, worship any god, ignore any inequity. All out of a kind of humdrum, everyday badness. Not the really high, creative loathsomeness of the great sinners, but a sort of mass-produced darkness of the soul. Sin, you might say, without a trace of originality. They accept evil not because they say yes, but because they don’t say no.”
― Terry Pratchett, Guards! Guards!

Freight and flight

Dawn heat, tarred sky

pink-striped on the horizon

beyond the lights of Darwin and the coast.

My rig sails into this air as though

weightless, two cars tall,

like a low-flying plane, skimming

the highway at the leaf-height

of the woollybutt,

dust clouds streaming,

gauges twitching to the forces

gently carrying me seated

like a gull wafted by a thunderstorm.

Driving this B-double, I’m as lusty

as Apollo, when he hitched his shining chariot,

the sun:

all the dazzlement

of power

focused in the steering column,

fierce stars arrowing

from the polished bull bar,

and a load that could crush me

a hundred times over –

but follows me

docile as a cloud.

If thou,” he answered, “follow but thy star. Thou canst not miss at last a glorious haven.” Dante.

ALICE CAREY (1820-1871).

For the human heart is the mirror
Of the things that are near and far ;
Like the wave that reflects in its bosom
The flower and the distant star.
The Time to be.

Faith was a dream technology / but one we couldn’t master, or do cold / and it soon became equivocal again. /

“According to Vedanta, there are only two symptoms of enlightenment, just two indications that a transformation is taking place within you toward a higher consciousness. The first symptom is that you stop worrying. Things don’t bother you anymore. You become light-hearted and full of joy. The second symptom is that you encounter more and more meaningful coincidences in your life, more and more synchronicities. And this accelerates to the point where you actually experience the miraculous.

(quoted by Carol Lynn Pearson in Consider the Butterfly)”

“I want a life that sizzles and pops and makes me laugh out loud. And I don’t want to get to the end, or to tomorrow, even, and realize that my life is a collection of meetings and pop cans and errands and receipts and dirty dishes. I want to eat cold tangerines and sing out loud in the car with the windows open and wear pink shoes and stay up all night laughing and paint my walls the exact colour of the sky right now. I want to sleep hard on clean white sheets and throw parties and eat ripe tomatoes and read books so good they make me jump up and down, and I want my everyday to make God belly laugh, glad that he gave life to someone who loves the gift.”

― Shauna Niequist, Cold Tangerines: Celebrating the Extraordinary Nature of Everyday Life

We can see a thousand miracles around us every day.

What is more supernatural than an egg yolk turning into a chicken?”

My mum says it’s because Celia has an attention span the size of a sesame seed.
Celia’s mum says it’s because Celia’s identity is unfurling itself slowly, like a tulip bud, and it’s a breathtakingly beautiful thing to see.”

“Hell wasn’t a major reservoir of evil, any more than Heaven, in Crowley’s opinion, was a fountain of goodness; they were just sides in the great cosmic chess game. Where you found the real McCoy, the real grace and the real heart-stopping evil, was right inside the human mind.”

― Terry Pratchett, Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch

“You have to take risks, he said. We will only understand the miracle of life fully when we allow the unexpected to happen. Every day, God gives us the sun and also one moment in which we have the ability to change everything that makes us unhappy. Every day, we try to pretend that we haven’t perceived that moment, that it doesn’t exist–that today is the same as yesterday and will be the same as tomorrow. But if people really pay attention to their everyday lives, they will discover that magic moment. It may arrive in the instant when we are doing something mundane, like putting our front-door key in the lock; it may lie hidden in the quiet that follows the lunch hour or in the thousand and one things that all seem the same to us. But that moment exists–a moment when all the power of the stars becomes a part of us and enables us to perform miracles.”

― Paulo Coelho, By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept

Why must I not perform miracles to draw people closer to the Lotus Feet of the Lord?” I asked my Master. And he answered: — “To those that believe, no miracle is necessary. To those that believe not, no miracle is sufficient.

Speak to me of things the world has yet to truly understand, of the instant meaning of each bird’s call, of a child’s secret thoughts in her mother’s womb, of the measured rhythmical time of every man and woman’s breath, of the true colors of the inside of the moon, of the larger miracles in small things, the deeper mysteries.”

“Lust,” she said. “Lust is a deadly sin.”

“Break the glass, I thought to myself, because it is a symbolic gesture. Try to understand that within myself, things were breaking of much more importance than a glass, and I’m happy for that. Look to your own inner struggles and break this glass.
Our parents taught us to be careful with glasses and with our bodies. They taught us that the passions of childhood are impossible; we should not remove men from the priesthood, that people do not perform miracles and that no one goes on a journey without knowing where he wants to go.
Break this cup, please, I thought to myself, and release of all these damn misconceptions, the habit you have of only doing that which everyone agrees with.”
